Land Rover is set to reveal the all new 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5, a much sportier and evolutionary version of its iconic SUV model in early 2017. Land Rover is keen to make up on sluggish sales that greeted the Discovery 4 version and take the fight to the door of BMW with the latter’s BMW X5 selling almost three times the number of Discovery 4’s scooped from showrooms within five months of each model’s release in the market.
What is New – Changes
The fifth iteration of the Land Rover Discovery comes with a host of new features including an all new electric motor to twin the 2.0 liter gasoline internal combustion engine. The exterior and interior as well as the chassis itself have undergone a complete evolution too.
Engine and Performance
As intimated above, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 is a pretty impressive hybrid car with its base version bearing a 2L Inline-4 gasoline engine combining with an electric motor, all enclosed in an eight-speed automatic gearbox. In city traffic, the EV motor has a pretty impressive range of 10 miles. The combined powertrain has an output of well over 240 horsepower and can bear up to 250 lb-ft of torque.
The Land Rover Discovery 5 can accelerate from 0-100km/h (0-62 mph) in less than seven seconds. The SUVs highest speed is 200kM/h (125 mph if you prefer). Such a stunning performance is made all the more impressive when it is coupled with a ZF automatic transmission system with nine speed and power transfer to all wheels.
According to widespread reports, there will be at least 4 other Land Rover Discovery 5 options available in the market. In terms of engine options, they are:
3.0 Liter V-6 gas engine
5.0 Liter V-8 gas engine
2.7 Liter V-6 diesel engine
3.0 Liter V-6 diesel engine
Design and Interior
The 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 is based on the same chassis borne by the latest Range Rover Sport model. It still comfortably provides room for 7 passengers but when the rear seats are folded, the cargo space is more voluminous compared to the 2014 model.
When compared to its predecessor too, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery has shed most of its aggressive all-terrain appearance for a smoother, urban-chic look. The most notable change is the stepped roof which has now been toned down for a more aerodynamic, sportier effect. The SUV’s interior also bears a decidedly futuristic appearance. It is dominated by a humongous touch screen hosting a state of the art head up display.
2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 Release Date and Price
Land Rover are keeping a tight lid on the 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5’s release date. However, insiders expect the new model to be available in dealerships no later than April 2017. The SUV is expected to bear a price tag of between $37,00 to $38,000. This will make it at least $1,400 more expensive than any other Land Rover model in the market at the present.
