In these days when the market is dominated by crossovers, it looks like FCA is going to do something that none of us would expect. Latest reports suggest that 2020 Dodge Durango could return to the classic body-on-frame platform. This SUV, currently a crossover, has been around for years. While the original model was a classic body-on-frame SUV, the current generation is a unibody crossover. It is present since 2010 and should be replaced soon. Our reliable source suggests this will happen in about a year or two.
We are about to see some very interesting changes on 2020 Dodge Durango if we can rely on rumors. It’s no secret that FCA considers current Durango as a surplus in its lineup. Still, it won’t kill this nameplate, but use it for a completely new model. It looks like the next generation will ride on the same platform as new 2020 Ram 1500. The legendary truck came completely new recently, so this would mean a brand-new, very modern architecture. If this happens, the new 2020 Dodge Durango will become a full-size SUV. This would also mean a styling similar to the Ram truck, though with few distinctive details as well.
Such scenario would mean that the new 2020 Dodge Durango will get a much bigger cabin. The new model would be significantly larger compared to the previous generation. This basically means that we can expect three rows of seating already in base variant. This is pretty much a standard in the class of full-size SUVs, where the new Durango would have a pretty hard task to establish its position on the market. This segment is already full of quality three-row SUVs, such as the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, Chevy Suburban etc.
If 2020 Dodge Durango comes based on the new Ram 1500, we expect from it to mimic the engine lineup. This would mean that the base model will continue with a familiar 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which is good for about 300 horsepower. Other models would rely on V8 power. Of course, there is a familiar 5.7-liter Hemi unit, which will probably be delivering around 400 horsepower. Finally, we could see some performance version, probably with a familiar 6.4-liter engine and max output around 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. A diesel version is also possible. There is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit, which delivers around 240 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All models will come with a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
2020 Dodge Durango Release Date and Price
The arrival of next-generation 2020 Dodge Durango is still uncertain, though some reports suggest it could come in a year or two. Base models should go around $45K to $50,000. When it comes to the competition, biggest rivals should be models like Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, Toyota Sequoia, Nissan Armada etc.
