Once a classic body-on-frame SUV, the Explorer is rather a modern crossover today. To be more precise, it is one very large crossover, which is about to get even bigger after the upcoming redesign. The latest report suggests that the new generation will come as 2020 Ford Explorer. The familiar nameplate will enter the sixth generation as a full-size crossover, just like we expected. It will receive a lot of novelties, including a completely new look, bigger dimensions etc. The new model should hit the market sometime in the next year.
For this redesign, the company prepares a lot of changes. First of all, there is a new platform to come. It will bring a lot of new things. First of all, count on much bigger dimensions. The new model is about to get around 10 inches in length, which will provide much more space on the inside. Unlike truck-based models that use plenty of aluminum, this one will stick to steel. However, it will still be significantly lighter than the current model, probably for about 200 pounds. Of course, expect to see a completely new styling. This is the most notable part of every redesign, so expect a lot of novelties in order to attract as more as possible new customers. While the basic shape might remain similar, expect the application of the brand’s newest design language, which will provide a much more dynamic look and more attractive overall appearance.
Big changes are expected on the inside as well. Redesigns usually bring a completely new cabin and this one shouldn’t be an exception. We are about to see a completely new cabin layout, which will bring much more curvy lines. We expect 2020 Ford Explorer to leave behind its SUV-ish past and to come with a more car-like approach. This would mean a significant improvement in terms of comfort as well. As we’ve already mentioned, the new model should be much longer, so expect to see much more legroom this time, even for the third row of seating. Of course, we will see a bunch of new technologies as well. Expect to see Ford’s newest infotainment system, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, as well as a bunch of new safety systems. Another new thing to comes is a familiar ST trim, a designation reserved for sporty versions.
Most likely, the 2020 Ford Explorer will drop an old Duratec V6 engine. On the other side, the current 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit will carry over. This engine delivers around 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. A performance-oriented 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 should carry over as well. This unit is good for about 365 hp and 350 pound-feet of torque. This is far more power compared to the model’s biggest rival, Chevy Traverse. Also, expect to see two new units in the offer, 2.7- and 3.0-liter EcoBoost engines, as well as a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Eventually, we could see a hybrid version in the future as well.
2020 Ford Explorer Release Date and Price
We presume that the new 2020 Ford Explorer will hit the market in the summer of 2019. Most likely, the price will be slightly higher compared to the current model, which starts at $32,000.
