If you like the style of this boxy crossover, the 2020 Ford Flex will probably the last chance to get it. According to the latest reports, we won’t see a successor. The company will turn to something more practical, or just want to make space to produce a bigger number of other crossovers that are far more popular in these days, like Edge, Explorer, Lincoln MKX etc. Considering soon discontinuation, the 2020 Flex most likely won’t feature bigger changes. It will come with a familiar styling, same engine and pretty much identical list of standard equipment.
In terms of base design characteristics, there are no changes to come for 2020 Ford Flex. We are about to see a familiar boxy shape, which originally came almost a decade ago. It is worth to mention that there was a major update five years ago, which has brought significant styling improvements. So, the current version looks more up to date. A unique boxy shape and retro approach are the model’s main trumps. Other than that, it is usually below average. You can find plenty of mid-size crossovers that are far more practical and offer better overall value, starting from the class-leaders 2020 Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander.
The cabin of this crossover started to show its age several years ago. Unfortunately, the company didn’t make many changes, so the current version seems far below class-standard when it comes to materials quality. On the other side, there are three rows of seating, and each one offers enough space to accommodate adult passengers. Thanks to the boxy shape, the cargo area is very practical and allows loads of bigger objects as well. Finally, there’s a decent list of tech features. The older-generation infotainment system might cause some trouble, but it comes with smartphone integration, which seems very practical these days. Bluetooth, USB ports and voice controls are also among standard features. On the other side, things like navigation or 12-speaker audio system are optional.
When it comes to powertrain, there are to variants in the offer. Base models feature an older-generation 3.5-liter Duratec V6 engine, which is good for 287 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. It comes in pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission. On the other side, theirs is an optional EcoBoost V6 with the same displacement. It features much more power, which goes all away up to 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. This engine is reserved for higher trims and comes with AWD as a standard feature.
