It looks like the British carmaker plans to revive the famous hybrid car, with the new 2020 McLaren P1. The original version of this model came in 2012 and it was in production for about three years. During this time, only 375 unit came out from the factory. It instantly gained a cult status and became an icon among sports cars lovers. It even managed to set some record times in Nurburgring and other famous tracks. All in all, it looks like it will get a successor, which will have even more impressive performances.
When it comes to the exterior design, we can speculate only about basic things at the moment. We expect to see further development of the company’s amazing architecture that is almost completely made of carbon fiber. New design solutions will bring improvement in various aspects, especially when it comes to aerodynamics. Of course, the new model will be even lighter, but the styling is another aspect where we’re expecting to see a lot of improvement. At the moment, it is hard to speculate about something more specific, though we expect to see a lot of sharp angles. A new design approach should provide superior air flow, which indicates a completely new design of air intakes, diffusers, side skirts and other parts.
On the inside, the 2020 McLaren P1 should stick to McLaren’s proven design philosophy. We won’t be seeing any excessive detail inside its track-oriented cockpit. The company should keep it simple, without unnecessary flashy details and too much additional equipment. We will see a quite simple infotainment system, with a small touchscreen and several analog controls, all ordered in McLaren’s familiar vertical line manner.
The previous version of the 2020 McLaren P1 features a hybrid powertrain. It comes with an advanced system that combines an efficient 3.8-liter V8 engine and hi-output electric motor. Combined, these two units are able to produce between 900 and 975 hp, depending on the version. When it comes to the new model, it is still unclear will it come in a hybrid variant, or there is a chance to see a completely new all-electric powertrain. In both cases, we will see a power increase, so the new model could easily go over 1000 horsepower. This would be around 20% more power compared to some of the potential rivals LaFerrari, which is good for about 800 hp and goes from zero to sixty in about 2.4 seconds.
2020 McLaren P1 Release Date and Price
The new 2020 McLaren P1 could come already in the next year. Expect to see a very limited number of units made. The price should be extremely high. Some sources suggest a sum of around $1,500,000.
