Ten years ago, Toyota presented a concept of a hybrid pickup truck called A-Bat. This model supposed to be the first hybrid truck on the market. However, it stayed in a form of a concept and has never entered serial production. A decade later, we are finding reports about the new version of this truck, which should come as 2020 Toyota A-Bat Concept, this time as a production model. So far, there is no confirmation from Toyota’s officials, so we will rely on rumors in this article.
The 2020 Toyota A-Bat Concept will once again come as a concept first, but also enter serial production, according to some reports. This time, we are about to see a little bit different approach. Most likely, the new truck will ride on a unibody platform, just like the Honda Ridgeline. It is still a pretty uncommon design approach for light trucks, but definitely brings a lot of benefits in terms of comfort and overall driving experience. Of course, expect the company’s new TNGA architecture to be involved. In terms of styling, there is no doubt that the 2020 Toyota A-Bat Concept will take an inspiration from the original concept, featuring a pretty boxy shape, full of sharp lines and futuristic details. Most likely, it won’t have too many things in common with the brand’s current design language.
The original A-Bat was characterized by very futuristic cabin design, which looks kinda funny in these days. The new model will most likely have a little bit different approach. This refers mostly to the dashboard design, which should feature a little bit more production-friendly design. In terms of base interior characteristics, the 2020 Toyota A-Bat Concept will most likely come in some kind of a double cab design, with two rows of seats and quite a spacious cabin. Also, expect a decent-sized bed to be installed.
If the 2020 Toyota A-Bat Concept is about to follow the design philosophy of the original, we should see a hybrid powertrain. Toyota currently has several hybrid systems in the offer. Still, the one that powers new Camry seems like the best choice, we believe. It is a hybrid system that combines electric sources of power with a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine, for a total output of 208 horsepower. Besides the decent amount of power, this powertrain also provides excellent fuel economy, which in Camry goes all away up to 50 miles per gallon. Of course, this vehicle will feature slightly lower mpg ratings.
2020 Toyota A-Bat Concept Release Date and Price
The new 2020 Toyota A-Bat Concept is nothing more than a rumor at the moment. So, we won’t speculate about some more precise date. We would just say that the concept will probably come next year. An eventual production model would come several months later. Considering current prices on the market, this model would probably go around $35,000.
