Though the German manufacturer already has a mid-size truck in its lineup, the company will try with something more refined and comfort-oriented. The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Pickup Truck will be the all-new model. Judging on its name, it seems pretty easy to make a conclusion about its base design characteristics. It will come based on the recently-introduced mid-size crossover. Considering this fact, we can say that the Honda Ridgeline will finally get some competition. The new 2020 Atlas Pickup Truck is in an advanced stage of development and should hit the market sometime in the next year.
We don’t expect bigger surprises in this aspect. Basically, Atlas SUV and pickup truck should be in the same relation as Honda Pilot and Ridgeline. This would mean pretty much identical styling from front fascia to C-pillar. The Atlas SUV came last year and completely follows VW’s newest design language. That should be enough to make a conclusion that 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Pickup Truck will come with the same front end. In terms of cab configurations, we expect to see some kind of a crew cab/short bed layout.
Unlike most mid-size truck on the market, this one will ride on a unibody platform. Though this might show weakness in terms of towing and overall capability, it will offer superior comfort. In practice, this would mean more legroom, better-quality materials, and more equipment. We can presume that the interior will mirror the SUV’s cabin. That would mean that the new 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Pickup Truck will feature slightly less refinement compared to Honda Ridgeline, but more standard features. Also, VW’s infotainment system seems to be a little bit more user-friendly. Despite these few strong points, Ridgeline still seems to be in a slight advantage, in our opinion, mainly because of superior fuel economy and more upscale interior design.
The new 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Pickup Truck should come with two engines in the offer. Base models will probably come with a familiar 2.0-liter turbo inline-four unit, which delivers 238 horsepower. An optional engine would be a 3.6-liter VR6, which is good for about 280 horses. For comparison, Ridgeline comes with a 3.5-liter V6 unit, which also delivers 280 horsepower, but offers far better fuel economy, even better when compared with the smaller four-cylinder engine.
