Compared to the rest of the world, the famous German manufacturer hasn’t managed to make some impressive sales numbers in North America. It is way behind Japanese rivals and that is the reason for the new strategy, which includes some brand-new types of vehicles. One of these is the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak. Recently presented in a form of a concept, this model should enter serial production soon. It is about to come with plenty of new design solutions, primarily focused on comfort. Expect to see new model already in the next year.
Judging from the model’s name, as well as on the recent concept, there is no doubt that the new model will be closely related to the Atlas SUV. In practice, this would mean that the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will ride on the MQB platform, which automatically determines it as potential Honda Ridgeline’s rival. These, let’s say, unibody trucks put comfort in the first place while keeping capabilities on the relatively decent level. Compared to the Atlas SUV, this truck will feature an 11-inch longer wheelbase. This clearly guarantees enough space for both passengers and a large cargo bed. When it comes to body style, we expect the new model to come in a double cab layout exclusively. In terms of styling, expect a lot of inspiration from the recent concept.
As we’ve already mentioned, the new 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will come in a double cab layout. This would mean seating capacity for five. Thanks to the pretty long wheelbase, this truck will be one of the largest in class. This should provide plenty of space, probably more than the cabin of Ridgeline features. Besides plenty of legroom, the new cabin should also feature plenty of refinement. We doubt that the new 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will have the same premium approach as the concept. More likely, we will see something production-friendly, something close to the Atlas SUV.
In this aspect, we expect no surprises. The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak should mimic its crossover sibling. This would mean a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four as the base engine, which is good for about 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. On the other side, higher trims will be available with a larger 3.6-liter V6. This one has a max output of 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, which is a similar amount to the future rival from Honda. The Ridgeline can tow up to 5.000 pounds and we expect similar numbers from the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak.
2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak Release Date and Price
Although we are still waiting for an official announcement, we are pretty sure that the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak will come in the next year. Base models will probably cost around $30,000.
